Fastpacking - What's in my Pack

Feeling unencumbered - Olympic National Park

What to pack when you're going light

In July, 2022, my girlfriend Susie and I completed an 80+ mile, 3-day fastpack in Olympic National Park (Trip Report here). Afterward, I thought it would be useful to take you on a tour through the gear I used.

In this video you'll learn:

  • What primary systems I use (backpack, tent, down quilt, stove)
  • Some of the features I look for
  • How to pack for movement

If you and your significant other don't mind wearing the same shirt for days in a row (hint - I'd wear wool next time), you might be surprised by how little you need for a 3-day trip.

Ready? Let's get to it.

Gear from the video

  • Pack Ultimate Direction Fastpack 30 (thanks, UD!)
  • Stove Trail Designs Sidewinder Ti-Tri Alcohol Stove (link)
  • Sleeping bag Therm-A-Rest Vesper 20F quilt
  • Water filter Salomon XA Filter
  • Tent Black Diamond Beta Light Tarp Tent
  • Puffy jacket Arc'teryx Atom LT hoody
  • Headlamp Petzl Actik Core Headlamp (misidentified in the video, oops)

A few general tips

  • For covering ground, pack food and water so it's accessible while jogging.
  • You might not need as much as you think. Start with the bare essentials. Add judiciously.
  • Don't feel bad about bringing a luxury or two. A nice cotton shirt, pack of cards, or a book can go a long way toward making the trip more fun.
