Gaia GPS is my recommendation for anyone looking for a do-it-all navigation app. The app has a polished interface, powerful features, and it’s responsive. While running the Glacier Peak Fastest Known Time earlier this summer I used Gaia GPS for quick route checks and as a backup to my watch for recording the route.

For longer trips with technical navigation I print a paper mapset using Caltopo. I also use the Caltopo app which integrates seamlessly with the Caltopo web app. But when I need an app that stands on its own and works without fuss, I reach for Gaia.

In this tutorial I cover the features of Gaia GPS that I use the most.

  • Select map layers

  • Add new map layers

  • Download maps for offline use

  • Import a GPX route file

  • Navigate a route

Ready? Let’s get to it.
