Keeping a regular journal offers a variety of benefits. Appreciating the life you have, establishing a clear intention for your day, and reflecting on life’s beautiful little moments are all helped by putting pen to paper consistently.

But establishing a regular practice can feel daunting. If you do manage to get started, you might find yourself glimpsing occasional insights while wasting a lot of time following your wandering mind. What are you supposed to be journaling about, anyway?

Having a clear structure, a time limit, and a routine will help you pull out these valuable pieces without making it feel like creative writing class every time you pull out your notebook.

Over the years I’ve experimented with a variety of journaling techniques, gratitude journals, and structures like “The Five Minute Journal”. As part of my experimentation I made a prototype of my own daily journal, incorporating the elements that I found most useful in a daily practice.

I thought others might get value from the practice, so I polished up my prototype and published it.

The Everyday Journal, as I started calling it, distills what I think are journaling’s most useful elements into a simple twice-daily routine. You’ll start the day with three elements; Gratitude, Intention, and Affirmation. You’ll end the day with a quick period of Reflection.

It’s designed to be quick and approachable. Each element has clear prompts and the whole practice shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes in the morning, and 5 in the evening. It can be much faster.

The Everyday Journal is a gift for you. I’ve listed it for what it costs to print, and the PDF is free. 2020 has been a tough year. I hope this will be a little bright spot for you.

If you use the Everyday Journal, I’d love to hear what you think of it. It’s a living project and I’ll incorporate feedback into future generations.

I had a lot of fun with this project. I’ve been really enjoying design recently, and this gave me a chance to get creative and produce something tangible.

Thanks for reading,
